The Role of Gamification in Enhancing Cybersecurity Awareness
Munirah Alrashed
In the digital era, cybersecurity threats pose a significant risk to individuals, organizations, and nations. As technology continues to evolve and become more integrated into our daily lives, the need for robust cybersecurity measures becomes increasingly crucial. However, the human factor is one of the most significant challenges in maintaining a strong cyber defense. Despite implementing advanced security protocols and technologies, human errors and lack of awareness can undermine even the most sophisticated systems. It is here that the concept of gamification holds immense potential in enhancing cybersecurity awareness and promoting secure practices among users. Gamification refers to incorporating game-like elements, such as points, badges, leaderboards, and challenges, into non-game contexts (Saleem et al., 2021). By tapping into the inherent human desire for achievement, competition, and enjoyment, gamification leverages the motivational power of games to encourage desired behaviors and promote learning. In the field of cybersecurity, gamification presents an innovative approach to educating and engaging users in a manner that is both informative and engaging. Traditional cybersecurity training methods often rely on passive and theoretical approaches, such as lectures or written materials, which many users perceive as dry and uninspiring. In contrast, gamification offers an interactive and immersive learning experience that captures users' attention and fosters active participation.
