Leadership in Management Information Systems: A Systematic Review
Mariana Fleck, Antônio Carlos Gastaud Maçada
Leadership plays a pivotal role in project success and the integration of technology and business. However, the existing literature still lacks a comprehensive understanding of how different leadership types impact these projects. This systematic review examines key leadership types in the Information Systems (IS), digital, and data domains, analyzing their core competencies and their relationship to project success. The analysis includes 54 studies published between 2020 and 2024 in the AIS and Web of Science databases. Findings categorize leadership into five main types: visionaries/strategists, decision-makers, drivers, technicians, and educators/facilitators. Additionally, the study highlights the significance of competencies such as strategic thinking, effective communication, and fostering a learning culture. By advancing the theoretical understanding of technology leadership, this research provides valuable insights for developing adaptive and innovative leadership practices.
